Violin teachers are talented violin players who can offer performances at any given time and give lectures on how the musical instrument functions. This is the common thought of many people. But actually, no matter how good a violin teacher is, he always needs to update his knowledge and practice his playing skills to be always ready both in teaching and playing the musical instrument.
Additionally, it is important for any teacher to always have a program or module for his classes to be efficient in teaching. Here are some tips on how a violin teacher can prepare for his violin lessons:
Read and Read and Read
Even if you already memorized the notes, techniques, and different facts about the violin, reading and re-reading your lessons is important to refresh your memory and keep you updated. Aside from reading and reviewing usual materials you use in class it will also help to have further reading on music in general, movies, and recent news which you can connect with your lessons.
Reading books, magazines, and website articles will update you on the new trends in violin-playing, which in turn can help make your classes more interesting.
Watch Performances
Watching violin performances especially of renowned violinists will also help you gain more knowledge in your profession. Try to watch musical performances in your area featuring violinists. But if you cannot afford it, the Internet can always give you free access to world-renowned violin players.
By watching different violinists, you can try to compare different styles of violin-playing and discover techniques which you have not known before. You can also recommend these materials to your students to inspire them to play.
Violin teachers who limit themselves to a few resources and techniques will have difficulty in answering some observations and questions of their students.
Practice Your Violin
Even if you are already teaching the violin, you must still consider yourself as a student. Be hungry to learn and master your instrument. Practicing also hones your skill. Teaching should not be an excuse to forget about your own development as a violin player. Moreover, if your students see this, he will likely follow your steps.
Organize the schedules of violin lessons and practice to easily manage your time. Short daily practice is ideal, but you can try a few times a week if your schedule is really tight.
Get to Know Your Students
As a teacher, you will be handling different types of students. Unlike academic schools with homogenous population in terms of age, violin schools accept students from different age levels. While classes are grouped based on the age and skill level of the students, you are likely to handle different violin lessons of beginners, intermediate, or advanced students. You may also have a class of adult learners and another for young students.
Build rapport among your students so they will feel at ease during your class. Remember that successful violin teachers are not only those who are expert in violin, but those who know how to help their students understand the musical instrument better.
